Knowing your users is not only knowing how they use your system, how they think and what they desire, but also in which environment they operate and how external circumstances influence their interaction with a system. Using a login form when you sit in a comfortable warm chair is not the same as trying to login on an outdoor screen in a freezing cold weather.

It's crucial to stay vigilant against turning requirements gathering into just ticking boxes. I've noticed how often this process inadvertently leads to software bloat — packing in features that aren't really necessary. To me, it boils down to two key aspects: Firstly, gaining absolute clarity on your MVP and its core purpose. Ideally, your MVP should have one primary focus with complementary features built around it. Once the MVP is sharply defined, you can then more effectively map out related epics and user stories.

It's important to keep in mind the ability to change the APIs and libraries, or how you might use the API or library to implement your functionality. Often, the API or library needs to be updated in order to achieve updated UI functionality, so you may find yourself becoming well versed in the system design so you can set appropriate expectations for the UI functionality, and you may need to engage with the system or software designers in order to get the API/library updated in order to (eventually) get the UI to be to the level that is needed for the users.

The question that has helped me the most is: "Who are my users?" And this, at face value, seems like a vague question. And often, in the beginning, it is. However, when you are having users evaluate, you may find that there were a bunch of aspects that you didn't consider about their background or their way of thinking, which you may want to request (or at least characterize) in future usability evaluations.

My suggestion is to not even think of "user friendly" as a goal. Talk about what it takes to make a system usable, not "friendly". Talk about what it takes to make a system that improves people's lives. Helps them accomplish their goals. "Friendly" is too vague of a term (even worse than "delightful"): be more precise in your goals, and how you measure them. And THEN follow the steps above.
