It's good to own your own set of microphone ??. Even so, you must go for the best vendor, tested and approved. And you should be prone to follow the user guide to keep it sound at all times for usage. Never go in for cheap microphones. In case you don't own a good set of microphone, make sure you test your microphone before hand. Best of it, use the microphone the MC is using to introduce you, there you are certain it's okay and responding well.

First look at the task you are asking the microphone to do. ie. Gig, Studio, Record, Perform etc. Then look at environment. Ie. Indoor, Outdoor, Large venue, Small studio etc. Once you know that you can concider best option in your price range. For recording I would recommend a condenser mic with Phantom Power as these tend to be more sensitive. These mics can range from ￡100 to ￡10000 so get the best you can afford. I would avoid one with lots of varied functionality (Polar pattens etc) and get a simple Cardoid one. USB ones like the Yeti or Shure mics are easy to set up and use. For live performance a dynamic mic would be better. You just need to decide between wired (cheaper and more robust) or Wireless (more flexible.

I have a friend who is a live audio engineer, and I was with a group of singers performing regularly at this club in Philadelphia. One day I noticed a minty smell from my mic. I highly recommend always maintaining a consistent *mic distance* -- from the tip of your lips to the pop filter or your mic. To achieve the perfect distance, make a "hang loose" or shaka sign with your hand (i.e. thumb and pinky outstretched, while pointer, middle, and ring finger are bent). Touch your thumb to your lips and the pinky to the pop filter or mic. As a VOCALIST, using a microphone every day can be taxing on the product as well as the products connected. However, RESPECTING the routine that keeps it working properly can minimize wear and tear. Also, needless to say, placing a microphone back into it's packaging is a great way to stop it as well.

If a vocalist has a low pitch, it is important to keep microphone closer to mouth as compared to a vocalist with high pitch. On higher vocal range, keeping a fair distance from the microphone can produce a good sound quality. But, overdoing so, can result in vocal strain. One should practice well to get good results.

We are vocalists. It’s good to be knowledgeable about tools we use, but I always consult with one of my sound engineering professionals before: selecting or upgrading, then also before implementing that [microphone] into the existing mix you have set for you. Engineers have your current equipment saved to their exact settings for your mix. Engineers configure the bandwidth of wireless mics to your mix & to networks you have been using. I’m not saying stay in your lane- i am busy learning growing and becoming more knowledgeable every day…but i AM saying you need to know exactly what you’re wanting and how a potentially expensive piece of equipment will play with the current environment you’re going to use it in.

All of the above are the ways to make your microphone last and function well. Choirs will need choir microphones. Soloists need solo mics. Instruments need mics made specially for instruments.

All the information on how to care, work with, handle, etc the equipment but always get a sound check to see how well your mic sounds in the space you'll be performing. For you and the mic, very important to know you'll be heard as best you sound. And, always make sure the other players have an amp/speaker in case the performing space doesn't have the best sound system... I believe handling a mic would be tough I you don't have a good posture and muscles in hands. I would recommend body exercise and rehearsing in front of a mirror for the best posture in a long performance.

In my experience, packing/storage and cable management are the top reasons microphones stop working. Caring for your equipment is #1 in any industry. Learn to wrap cable properly and store electronics as instructed.
