What are the best ways to learn repair skills and stay current with new technology?

It's not just one thing, one secret. Different people also have different learning styles. What I did was a combination of: 1) Book learning (not listed here); 2) Items 3 Blogs and Forums, and item 4 Online Communities. The biggest issue is that everyone on the Internet has an opinion, and many are wrong. There's tons of false information out there on technical subject matters; 3) YouTube videos. Take these with a grain of salt also; 4) Practice and experiment. This may be the most important, along with number 1 above.

Sure online courses are important but none of the other means is less effective, the modern world keeps changing and to stay up to date we need to share, try and get hands on experience

No one was born with knowledge, so you have to get it from somewhere. My experience has shown me that there is a balance between theory and practice. 1) Internet is full of information. Books are one source of information, but not the only ones. Blogs and videos of some select technicians were very valuable. 2) Trial and error. Many times I purchase broken parts just to learn. How they work? What has failed? That has shown me so many excellent designs, of any type: mechanical, electrical, installation, electronic... 3) Practice and improve the technique. One thing is locating the error, the issue. Another thing is being able to repair it. The technique requires training, as there is always room for improvement. 4) Invest in tools!

Everyone learns and comprehends things differently and at different speeds. There is no one trick. Online courses works for some, for others like me, only hands on experience works. A tip is to build up a network to have access to a variety of new hardware, people working in different sectors of the field.

One thing I've found helpful with certifications, is that not all but some company's would really look for certifications so I would definitely recommend trying out free courses online that can help you up to speed.

I am not fan of blogs and forums.Apart from the official ones, I don't use them, there is a lot of speculation. But they can help sometimes.

Blogs and forums can be great, but sometimes you'll face company specific issues and raising these can potentially demonstrate elements of your organization to the outside world, intentionally or unintentionally. Use these sites with caution and don't post anything there, there is some great content from time to time, but it won't always be the first thing you see as sometimes it can be like clickbait.

Like many things, the quality of blogs and forums can vary greatly. When it comes to public blogs or forums I try to go in with an Open mind, but also try to be aware of the content. If I feel it is note meeting what I need I move to another.

There are some great communities here on LinkedIn but always beware of some users who will contact you to sell you a product or item to use that will "benefit" you and your companies' productivity. Unless it's a well known tool [e.g., an Add-in you can download in your Office Add-in tool] which you can download for yourself and your workplace and cybersecurity team can vouch that it is secure and won't compromise your organization's information, don't take any of these items or add-ins from strangers. If you ever feel pressured by them, report them to LinkedIn and block them.

Have the intention and attitude that you can! Dedicate 12-14 hours a day for 20-25 days. Goto every possible seminar. Watch every possible video. Read every possible book on it. Ask many many questions to the experts in forums/ quora and real life. Start practicing once you start feeling the confidence within. Search to learn, like how a mother would search for her lost son. This is how I do it, it works.

Something I have found helpful with this is sites such as LinkedIn providing contacts with employers and employees that often provide how to tips and links to relevant articles on what is emerging in tech. Following them on X and other Social Media is very helpful as well. Often I rely on my network of people when trying to solve specific problems they may have encountered or for some ideas on how to tackle new and unusual issues found.

I'd recommend following some industries leading authors and developers as it creates a sense of yearning for what's next. When we don't hear or see things, we get complacent and lose interest generally. These leaders and or top Authors, will have the latest insights (scoop) as to what to look forward to, and sometimes it may be something that's been in the works for years. So knowing and being kept in the loop will be proven handy in making sure all your tech needs are being met.

I believe in the “RTL” (Read the logs) method of troubleshooting. The logs will normally be able to guide you towards the issue and there is so many posts on the internet about the log in question. Logs are your friends.
