I agree that it is important to use interactive elements for keep your audience's focus. A few studies have shown that most people cannot pay attention for more than 10 minutes straight. Mixing things up regularly changes the state people are in and they will be able to refocus their attention.

Una excelente forma de mantener el interés y el compromiso de la audiencia con tu charla o ponencia es recurrir a las preguntas. De esa forma quitas el foco de ti y lo desvías al público. Este se convierte en protagonista. Les das la opción de que compartan sus puntos de vista. No puedes contar con que las personas se interesen en tus palabras… pero sí puedes contar con que se interesen en sus propias respuestas ;-).

Think about how you integrate VIP participants like executives who give a welcome or guest speakers at a workshop. They might not be involved enough to be fully integrated in the process, so they can throw things off. Make sure you work with them beforehand to align expectations. A great trick to get them to contribute best, is to make sure they look good in whatever they do: e.g. nobody looks good talking for 60 minutes with text slides!
