Like any other system integrations, old hardware is compatible with old software and vice versa. Any changes during the long time period will surely have some incompatibility and need to be upgraded. I am speaking this mostly as hardware technician, but I am sure, that every new system can be integrated in old type of hardware with the people who really know how to upgrade and read the code.
