As a student, a teacher once told me that I could never turn in another book report on a horse book. I stopped reading for pleasure for the next 25 years. Failed to improve my comprehension and speed reading skills and failed to attain my dream job - veterinarian. A better conversation would have been for that teacher to suggest a book with a hint of horses and much more -- The crusades were all about horses. Shakespeare wrote a play that included a Jockey.

Take learning walks and have students name things they can learn about. (For lower grades, you can do this with each of the senses. Or you can use a different part of speech each time. Then have students choose words and identify the many ways in which they could study them. For example: We heard a train. We can study where the train goes, how the train moves, and who works on the train. We observed "jumping". We can measure how high we jump. We can test different ways to jump. We can learn about the muscles that help us jump.
