To ensure alignment between EIA and SEA, you should use the SEA findings as inputs for scoping, screening, and baseline studies for EIA. Additionally, you should ensure consistency between the objectives, indicators, and criteria of both processes. Involve the same stakeholders in both processes and facilitate information exchange to ensure feedback. Finally, monitor and evaluate the implementation and outcomes of both SEA and EIA.

Planning an EIA should be integral with the strategic planning process for the activity of event under consideration. Depending on many different aspects and attributes, the process, the jurisdiction, and the transboundary and social issues and such will need to be identified, understood and adequately and properly addressed in the design. The process of impact assessment cannot and should not be an add on to a project. Certainly there are circumstances where the type, nature and level of assessment will vary, but understanding your activity's or project's interaction with the surrounding environment is paramount and critical to the success in designing, constructing and operating any project.

Spatial planning is the process of assigning land and resources for different uses and activities, such as urban development, transportation, agriculture, and conservation. It can have an impact on the location, design, and impacts of projects that require EIA.
