I agree, however you also need a strong assessment tool. Most leaders have a slightly biased view of their true leadership effectiveness. Many tools exist however the most comprehensive tool is the Leadership Circle Profile. The LCP will clearly illustrate your strengths and weaknesses and will be foundational in creating a development plan that will get you started on your leadership journey!

Having a clear understanding of your career ambitions, strengths, and weaknesses is always conducive to faster progress with coaching. If these questions help guide you, use them! If they make you want to wait on coaching, consider why. Many high-performers have a perfectionist side that can hold back progress when you feel you need to know exactly where you are going before you start. Executive coaching is even more incredibly important for emerging leaders who have not yet had the time or experience to work out some of these answers. A skilled executive coach (with appropriate ICF credentials) will work through these questions with you and guide you on your executive journey, from any starting point. I agree, in addition, the “GOOD FIT” must be the priority! The Good FIT simply means credential requirements are met (if applicable), pricing, time commitment, and expected outcomes are mutually accepted. Lastly, validating the coach’s experience and their ability to connect with you is Key. The best way to accomplish this is to connect with the coaches that are being considered.

What pops for me here is leadership is leadership no matter what field you’re in. You need a coach that truly understands what it means to be a successful leader. And you need someone that can guide you on this journey. I would also recommend that you research coaches who will be blunt and challenging. The key is changing perspectives, learning and growing. And I’ll add, it’s a journey not a race.

Testimonials are a greatest measure of a coach. What have they helped their other clients to achieve? There will be the clues to what they are capable of. A note on testimonials: if you're ever unsure of their veracity (it happens), ask for a referral to speak directly with a former client directly about their experience. If something looks iffy about the testimonial, and they won't refer you to a previous client, it may be worth walking away.

Great advice. I’ll add that most coaches offer introductory sessions for free and this is a great opportunity to check the chemistry between you and your potential coach. As is in life some relationships just aren’t meant to be. This is a 2 way street as well. Great coaches are also assessing the situation and will help you in your decision making process. Coaching is such an important aspect for life and your professional development so you need someone you definitely feel comfortable with and will push you gently!

La qualité d’écoute est très importante, et un bon coach sait écouter, alors est-ce que votre interlocuteur est en écoute active ? Est-ce qu’il vous laisse parler sans vous interrompre ? Arrive-t-il à mettre le doigt là où ?a vous fait très mal ?

By being in conversation with a coach, you'll be able to understand who they are, what they do and how they work. The most important question to answer is: "will this coach help me achieve what I want to achieve?". Coaching relationships are often about walking a tightrope between immense closeness and necessary distance. It's highly likely that you will be talking about things you may talk to no other person in the world about. At the same time, for coaching to work, there needs to be some distance and perspective, and a good deal of logistics with a splash of talking about money thrown in. The best relationships are a mix of the two. It requires work from both parties, and sometimes that is hard work. Both sides need clear boundaries blended with vulnerability and openess. Your feelings are a good guide here. I always think that finding the right coach is an intuitive process: you'll feel the connection.

I agree and understanding the business of coaching is important. Most programs do not offer this and it was something I ish I had researched before selecting a program. Another important thing to consider as you research a program is the community you will be connected to. Look for a program with a strong community you can be a part of after the completion of the program is also important.

When starting your coaching practice, do the math to understand how many sessions you need to do to make an income that works for you. Don’t stare blindly at massive wealth creation, and don’t plan for an income at the bottom of your scale either. Your client is best served by you paying yourself a comfortable living wage for the rest of your coaching career, and not burning out because you serve too many clients. What that means is up to you. My golden number is 8 to 10 clients weekly so I am still personally invested in my client, knowing from memory what is going on in their lives. More clients make my sessions less effective because I need notes to jog my memory. Less session makes me unfulfilled. It’s your journey, and you know best.
