What are the best ways to identify areas for professional development in a performance evaluation?

For occupational therapists, there is an expectation that you are actively involved in your supervision and professional development planning sessions. This means you don't just turn up to a meeting and expect your supervisor to tell you what you could improve and how to go about fixing it. Before your meeting, reflect on your achievements and areas for improvement, but also what you enjoy about your work. With burnout rates high in the health sector, start with working out what work you enjoy - your supervisor can't do this for you. Then use your performance evaluation sessions as a way of sharing this with your supervisor and exploring new opportunities within your role to do more of it.

Identifying areas for professional development in a performance evaluation involves a comprehensive assessment of an individual's skills, knowledge, and performance. This can be achieved through self-assessment, feedback from supervisors, peers, and subordinates, as well as reviewing performance metrics and goals. When reviewing your goals and objectives, it's important to also reflect on WHY you care about achieving them. Besides accountability to your profession or supervisor, what drives you? It can be easy to lose track of performance goals as the year goes on. Before an evaluation, it can be helpful to review the goals and give yourself a few minutes to reflect and see how you would grade your performance. Reflect on what may have gotten in the way if you didn't meet the goal. Does that obstaacle still exist? Is there a plan to overcome it? If you have met the goals, were they recognized, by you, by your management? Did you know when the goal was achieved? This prep will leave you ready to discuss the goals in more detail, if/as needed. It can be good to check our perceptions. (but you also must be prepared for the answer, if its not what you expect). If its post-performance evaluation, it can help you hone in on the items you'd want to work on/or not. Even though it can be tough to stomach, if most others have similar feedback, then you'd want to look at that.
