What are the best ways to handle unexpected distractions during a live event speech?

It happens so now and then that you don't manage to get your laptop connected to a venue's A/V equipment. Next time you walk onstage, you might just ignore the projector and start presenting “naked”. Naked presenting stands for delivering a presentation without any visuals. It lets you concentrate on your audience and on your message instead of on Powerpoint, Keynote, or Prezi content. In case you’re too shy to go full monty in front of your audience, you can leave your hat on... and use a white board or a flip chart and a few markers to "cover" your nakedness.

Handle distractions gracefully, whether the interruption is due to a technical glitch/environmental factor or personal issues. Give it a time, take a pause and refocus on the audience and addressing your topic. In a world that now relies endlessly on technology we are often faced with glitches. The best way to react to these situations comes from preparation. If you prepare for a speech / presentation you should know the information you are delivering flawlessly. A glitch in presentation materials when prepared correctly will always allow you to pivot. In my experience these glitches and preparation have ended up being the most intimate interactions I have had with my audience. Not only does this preparation build trust and confidence in your audience it also allows you to take a moment to break the glitch with some comedic relief before getting back into the materials. #failtopreparethenpreparetofail

Technical problems happen, even when you’ve tested your equipment before hand. The most important thing you can do is remain calm under pressure, and always have a backup plan in place. I recently was hosting a virtual live event and the connection was slow and eventually dropped completely. Luckily my team was able to quickly send a text message to participants to rejoin. We were able to switch to a faster internet connection and once we started (for the second time) we had zero issues. Most of the time, your audience will understand that tech issues happen. When the show started, we thanked them for being so patient and then continued with the same energy and excitement as before.

The best way to handle an audience interruption is to be ready for it. Think about any possible situation and prepare a nice and funny response or reaction to it. Humor works great for bringing the attention back to the speaker.

So what to do when the distraction is internal? One thing to remember is that while you know this speech inside and out your audience doesn't. If you miss a line or stumble realistically only you know. In my career as a lecturer I have had to stop talks for a range of reasons including tech issues, forgetting my place, family emergencies and my own hospitalization and the common theme is that when you are honest and genuine with your audience about what is happening they are a lot more forgiving. We are all humans and understand that life happens around us whether we are busy or not.

En pareille circonstance , il faut tenter de revenir à l'essentiel en banalisant l'incident, saisissant ainsi l'occasion de répondre avec un peu d'humour à ce qui s'est passé. On peut en profiter pour faire une plaisanterie ce qui qui a le merite de détendre le public. Des esprits plus avisés trouveront la également l'occasion de poursuivre sans trop de casse. Le rire, une blague bien à propos seront ainsi autant ressources Il faut en tout cas s'y préparer.

It is always helpful to have at least two full drill /mock sessions of any event before the actual event .By doing so, conditions applied, that each and every aspect of the upcoming session has to be practiced in the drill from start till the end of session, the pre - start of the event and post-end of the event too.I had conducted quite a few events , one being my university annual fest with an audience capacity of 1000+ people attending the event on a daily, continuously for 12 consecutive days and inferred that we should even practise the anticipated problems that might arise while an ongoing event. This will make us experienced and equipped with handling the pressure of the situation as well as well-versed with the relevant skill sets.
