What are the best ways to handle tight deadlines in translation specialization?

I have translated breaking news stories in real time as a freelancer for BBC Indian Languages. The first thing I would do was skim through the story or script before I began translating. In such cases we should not overpromise and should be honest and communicate the time required to complete the task. On-time notification can save time and help can be included. Apart from that, planning is rule number one! After receiving the text, we can plan when all stages will be fulfilled - getting familiar with text, research, the translation itself as well as proofreading.

Learn to say "No" and don't bite off more than you can chew! Always underestimate your daily output, and keep some spare capacity in your schedule. You never know when a project will turn out to be more complex than expected or when you will receive a urgent request from your most important client. By having some leeway, you can avoid working overtime, having to ask for extensions, or worse, missing important deadlines.

Knowing yourself, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, as well as identifying opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis), is crucial. It's also important not to take on more than you can handle, which is a common mistake among freelancers starting their careers. When estimating your workload, be conservative and factor in time for setbacks and challenges. If necessary, negotiate reasonable deadlines that consider both your capabilities and the client's needs and expectations. If the contract permits, don't hesitate to seek assistance and maintain open communication with the client. If multiple there are other colleagues involved in the same project, appoint a responsible person to review/prooferead and standardize the work.

It it also recommended for the translator to keep the record of translation speed. The speed might be different for various types of documents or spheres. Also, you need to consider what you have to deliver to client. Sometimes it could be just a translated document in the same format, but sometimes there might be specific requirements, like style guides, terminology base, consistency check, quality check report, etc. If it is the first time you are working with the client with those kind or requirements, you need to add extra time to read, acknowledge and research on the provided materials. This will impact significantly on the translation speed.
