I always appreciate working with people that show initiative and leadership. In my role as a medical director, I've fielded many complaints from employees over the years. There's generally two ways that people bring problems to leadership. There are those that point out the problem and complain about it. And then there those rare folks that will bring both the problem AND a proposed solution. If you want to be recommended for a promotion - then try to be the person that brings solutions and ideas to the team, instead of just the problems and complaints. I like to reward leadership and initiative.

One of the easiest ways to destroy your rapport is to overextend yourself. If you can't perform a certain skill or have a lack of knowledge you gain respect by being honest. Being overconfident and risking injury to yourself or the staff will not build the trust or rapport needed for promotion.

In my experience, we tend to forget all of our accomplishments. I tell young physicians to create a confidence portfolio. It's a way to beat imposter syndrome, but it can also be used when you want to be considered for a promotion. Here's what you include in it: 1. Achievements and accomplishments that you've gotten 2. The challenges and setbacks you’ve overcome 3. Some external validation The first part is easy to figure out. The second is a list of setbacks or difficulties that you've gotten through. I like to look at this part when facing uncertainty in life. It reminds me that I've gotten through adversity in the past. The last is external validation because sometimes we must look at ourselves through another's eyes.

Going “ over and above “ your duties is a great way to demonstrate commitment and loyalty to physician groups. Physicians are often the last employees to leave at the end of the day so an employee that is prepared to put in more hours at work helping to augment abd facilitate patient care is a great way to get noticed and land a new opportunity
