What are the best ways to get employees excited about waste reduction in Lean Manufacturing?

In explaining the benefits of waste reduction, the best traction on the manufacturing floor comes from improvements to make the operators' workday easier. Though the North Star is always the customer (that's why we are all here), exactly how creating an easier workday for operators in turn helps the customer is the key link. In the greatest improvements we've made, how the operators walk less distance, lift less weight, work less to load a fixture, wait less for upstream & downstream operations, have less chance of making an error, move less to reach materials & tools, take less time for work process steps, etc. are the most powerful impact for employee, company, and customer. Less work for identical/improved product = less waste. Bingo!

Start with a "why" and explain to employees the benefits of lean and how it can reduce waste in the processes eventually making their lives easier. Talking to them about the benefits it would bring to the business eventually making a better place for them to work. Also giving them the definition of Value Added and non-value Added activities. By focusing value added activities we keep the customer in mind doing any task at hand in the job. Eliminating or reducing non-value added activities helps with running the business smoothly and more efficiently.

The premise behind this goal sounds like you're having to sell them on the idea, and more often than not, you can approach improvement with the people doing the work and solicit their direct feedback and input. People generally don't like things being done "to" them. It's our responsibility to bring them onboard to implement their ideas. Employees have solutions in mind to make their own lives easier, safer, more efficient, etc., but they're generally unheard. You likely won't have to "sell" them on the benefits so much as empower them to speak up and make the changes necessary to improve the work they do. We'll get more out of the people we lead by propping them up than building teams of "experts" to solve all of the problems.
