What are the best ways to gain CSR experience as a recent graduate?

The CSR/ESG profession has changed extensively over the last 20 years. There used to be one path to do the work in corporate responsibility but the advantage today is a junior employee at a company can engage in sustainability and corporate philanthropy from various departments they work in: legal, HR, marketing, communications, operations, etc. CSR is no longer in a silo. Many companies have ERGs and various committees that cross departments and focus on CSR. I encourage junior employees to join these efforts whenever and wherever they are available (in addition to all the other suggestions added below).

Connect with professional organizations, scour their websites, read their reports, take some training, familiarize yourself with their CSR job postings and related requirements. Connect with CSR professionals who are members of these organizations and ask for a 30-minute informational interview to learn about what they do, follow these experts on social media e.g., X, and Linkedin. The best CSR orgs to connect with include: 1. Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship, 2. Association of Corporate Contributions Professionals, and 3. Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose.

Human behaviour is one of the important components of ensuring sustainability of community initiative. Here comes the importance of volunteering by individuals to contribute towards behaviour change of community and make projects sustainable, at the same time it strengthens individuals character as a good human being and feeling better towards contributing to the well being of the society.

Volunteering is a crucial avenue for recent graduates to develop CSR expertise. Expanding your focus to include global corporate volunteering offers insights into the complexities of international CSR. Global corporate volunteering goes beyond fostering transferable skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. It adds adaptability and cross-cultural competence, showcasing your ability to contribute meaningfully to diverse settings—a highly valued skill in today's interconnected world. Opt for projects that provide chances for impactful contributions on a global scale. This approach not only enhances your skill set but positions you as a candidate committed to making a significant difference on a larger stage.

For a young graduate, work experience is a skills booster. It enables them to quickly grasp the operational reality of the concepts they have read, heard and studied. Work-study or internship programmes then take on their full meaning, especially when they are accompanied by a thorough analysis and synthesis, such as a dissertation or thesis.

Gaining CSR experience through a job or internship is a practical approach for recent graduates. This hands-on experience in CSR projects, strategies, and policies is invaluable. For example, interning at a company like Nestle, known for its community initiatives, can offer insights into sustainable business practices. Similarly, a CSR role at a corporation like Microsoft provides exposure to corporate philanthropy and ethical business operations. Networking with experienced CSR professionals during these roles enhances understanding and skills. Tailoring applications to specific CSR roles and organizations is crucial, as each company has unique CSR focuses and cultures.

Intern with a CSR / Corporate Sustainability / ESG focused consultancy. This is a great way to get diverse and hands-on experience and insights into the broad realm of CS-management activities.

In my experience, although professionalising fast, the broad CSR field is far from being mature and there are no 2 similar positions across organisations. Applying for a CSR job remains in my view the best way to get a first exposure to this area. Another way is to bring sustainability into an existing position, as the trend is towards transferring ownership of these issues into organisations. As resources are scarce, adding a CSR hat to your existing role may be a way to get started, as a short term and temporary solution. Sustainability is not a Friday afternoon job, so be mindful of not burning yourself out, and consider changing your role to a full time position into sustainability when/if it makes sense to you and your organisation.

If you have a job that's entry-level, become a volunteer ambassador or champion or take a role on an ERG comittee. You will learn how to balance social justice and impact initiatives with business needs, how to run campaigns amd events, how to consider the needs of nonprofits, how to inspire people to action, how to encourage behaviour change, how to measure progress, how to advocate for change, how to work cross-functionally and most importantly about the issues themselves. If your company allows employees to review grants applications, that's another way you can learn how to assess the social value of investments.

The best way to gain CSR experience, is learning-by-doing. No online certifications or offline lectures can replace the real experience of learning from those who are under-served by the market machinery, downtrodden in the social setup or under-serviced in terms of public good provisions. Get your hands dirty and learn from the users on their practical challenges, utilise these learnings to implement an actual field intervention and learn again from the feedback loops that the system will throw back at you.

Don’t choose CSR unless you feel a strong need to change the world. If it is only a job for you then you can do more damage than good. To really contribute to the world you need a fire in your belly that gives you the energy to strive for change and the courage to tell the Corporate what they need to do if they are serious about change! Thus for fresh graduates some volunteering experience is good! Secondly, you need to be clear where or in what area you want to work. There are many areas ranging from rural development to urban resettlement to refugee camps etc. Choose what adds to the fire in your belly and then look for a corporate in that area- field and geography. With funding dry up it’s up to the profit makers now!! Best of Luck!!

People in CSR field come from many different paths. Some people get a job right after college, others pivot from nonprofit or consulting sides. CSR role is a "feel good" job, therefore, it is very competitive. Many people willing to get a step back or lower title/salary to get in the field. If this is what you want to pursue, be clear, be consistent, and you will land a role.

Before there's a CSR or ESG team in a company, there are often people who want to contribute and do something. Look for those people and collaborate with them to figure out what the impact of your company really is. Is it environmental or social? Is it in your own operations or in the value chain? And then find a way to contribute something to a meaningful topic in your current role. Figure out what you can do to spark change - and share this with the others in your coalition of the willing!
