Researching experts with authority on the topic is one key pathway to identifying credible sources. It is not the only. Expertise is cognitive advantage, built over time and grit. Formal experts will easily recognize the patterns they are trained in or can associate with their background knowledge. But they may miss angles and perspectives that were not part of their prior exposure. When reporting stories on chronic social or environmental issues - mass incarceration, homelessness, gender violence, etc., - community knowledge and lived experiences of people may matter even more than formal or expert authority. Research needs to find these sources too. Then the interrogation may produce a shared reality closer to the truth.

I've found that investing in communities (professional, advocacy, etc.) in your audience tends to be a great long-term bet to find sources. - Go to events they organize. - Embed in legitimate and curious conversations with people. - Do some open listening without the extractive agenda of "a story to submit tomorrow". - Ask open-ended questions about "how so", "tell me more", "how did you come to this conclusion", etc.. This lets people with diverse experiences and expertise feel comfortable responding. This tends to produce leads for people who may become sources tomorrow when the time comes. Because, sooner or later there will likely be a story topic and you will be able to go to people you had great conversations with.

5 Be ethical

There are deeper and more transparent ways to deal with the issue of "bias" in journalism: 1. Be accepting that as journalists, we will have bias that others can see. We are human. We bring in biases from childhood, cultural upbringing, schooling, elitism, expertise, knowledge, class experiences, etc. 2. Be self-aware about biases: political leanings, subject leanings, class learnings, gender leanings, etc. 3. Be willing to defend one good bias: a pro-democracy bias. That means anti-democratic and authoritarian voices have to be framed and sandwiched in stories carefully. Democracies protect independent journalism, it is not a favor to us. Journalism has to be pro-democratic to ensure democratic culture is nourished too.
