Load test with proper instrumentation to gather metrics. My favorite web load testing tool is JMeter. It is stand alone so it's not a Java only solution. As far as instrumentation goes, there are a lot of possible solutions. My least favorite would be logging, but if you know how to do it, it works. I've done it. I prefer any of the paid instrumentation solutions as long as they include monitoring and reporting as that is generic functionality that you are not writing and the skill of using those tools can be applied to other applications.

There's an old saying that you will get what you measure. So decide what your goals are and implement monitors and measurements for those desired outcomes. If your goal is to be highly available then add monitors to check if your application is available. Implement external monitors and be sure they're not just exercising your caching strategy. If your goal is to be highly performant, implement a variety of monitors that make different types of queries and measure the round trip time. Again, be really clear about what you're measuring. In a web application interesting metrics include things like time to first byte, full page load, render time, and time to deliver images and css. All of these impact the user perception of reliability.

Other than what's already been mentioned, I'd like to share a couple more tips for testing your app's reliability: Keeping your app reliable also relies a lot on automated testing. It works alongside how you update your app, so it catches any issues early on. Automate routine testing tasks and incorporate them into your build processes. This makes sure that any changes you make don't mess up what's already working well. Use predictive analytics to analyze the historical data and predict issues before they pop up. This way, you can fix things before they become a big issue for your app's reliability.
