Once you find out how they are engaging, start engaging yourself by proving value. Answer common questions, and provide resources. Building relationships early on with these stakeholders allow you to bring them along on your journey to building a solution that they NEED and will PAY for.

The process should start by asking for feedback in the development of understanding the problem. This is a basic tenet of many problem solving processes, including design thinking and participatory design. If you wait to engage community stakeholders at the solution stage, you run the risk of having to retro-fit core issues, which is unlikely to work well.

When engaging with stakeholders a key ingredient is to put yourself in their shoes. In Digital world we call it the “user journey”. Ask them what they think the problem/ issue is so that you can see the difference perspectives ( of what might well be the same thing). Equally just listening first helps you to gather information to map the whole problem whether it’s the root cause or something else along the way. Don’t act, just listen - “be a sponge and just soak it up”
