What are the best ways to encourage patient engagement in care?

Trust and rapport are a start, but it is hard to foster engagement in a system that is so depersonalizing for so many patients. If we want patients to be engaged, we need a healthcare system that treats them likes individuals and encourages their autonomy in every stage of their care.

When talking to a patient, we need to be aware that our patient does not have control over that subject. Therefore, we need to talk in a clear, didactic and at the same time objective way. Having the necessary sensitivity to promote the patient's understanding of what is happening.

In my experience of working with individuals I have used the person centered approach to care planning. Allowing individuals to actively participate in their own goal setting along with the clinician helps for a greater outcome. I have learned that when the care planning process is more individualized it is more specific to their needs and it is obtainable and measurable.

The overburdened doctor's office does not foster patient engagement. Most practices would love to engage more frequently with their patients but simply cannot keep up with the administrative burden. Care coordination assistants powered by AI are a potential solution.

I think it would depend on the type of care they are wanting or needing? Whether they have to be coerced into care because it’s a health situation, or a life or death situation, a drug and alcohol situation, a legal issue, or it has impacted their life on every conceivable level, it won’t go anywhere until they deem it important enough. No matter what the cost is. In my experience, a good rapport & understanding of their individual situation, a trust that you will do what you say, agendas that encompasses their concerns & goals, & case management with any other parties involved, is a solid starting point.
