It is important to keep the waste handlers in mind at all times as they will handle your discarded waste once it leaves your site. It is a major risk putting sharp waste in a non-sharps container. The handlers can get cut and be exposed to potential health hazards or infectious disease with lifelong effects. 3. Normal biohazardous waste gets disposed of in red, leak-proof bags and appropriately labelled container. Sharps gets disposed of in puncture and leak resistant containers.

I wish the article specified what kind of lab ... Research lab, Pathology lab, School lab, Analytical lab ... They can be quite different. Aside from that, Waste Management is just two activities: 1-Physical handling of the wastes, and 2-Compliance with the applicable regulations. The Physical Handling boils down to knowing which wastes can be consolidated (i.e. flammable liquids) and which must be segregated (i.e. acids and bases). Regulatory Compliance is going to depend (in America) upon the Generator Category (Large, Small & Very Small). The regulations for these vary tremendously. In one lab I worked at they generated radioactive acid wastes. We neutralized the acid and shipped rad wastewater and saved a fortune on disposal.

Always remember lab waste can sometimes be unusual waste codes - including Acutely Hazardous Wastes. Acutely hazardous wastes have much lower thresholds to make the generator a LQG (2.2 lbs vs 2200 lbs) and much lower thresholds for satellite accumulation areas as well (one quart of liquid). Check your waste codes closely.
