When writing an algorithm, think about how large the input will get, will it be for 10 people and grow to 100? And test the time it takes so you can estimate how it scales. Then you can consider the correct algorithm based on the shape/type of the data, for example if it looks like a graph, then depth first search or breath first search will work wonders.
