Universal design is an approach that aims to make products and environments usable by all people, regardless of their age, ability, or situation. This applies to public restrooms as well, as they should accommodate the needs of people with different physical, sensory, cognitive, and mental abilities, as well as different cultural and personal preferences. To enhance public restrooms, clear and consistent signage should indicate the location, function, and availability of the restrooms, as well as the accessibility features and options inside. There should also be wide and level entrances and pathways that allow easy access for people with wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, or luggage. Additionally, spacious and flexible stalls should be able to fit different types of equipment and users while providing privacy or assistance as needed. Adjustable and accessible fixtures and accessories such as sinks, faucets, soap dispensers, mirrors, towel dispensers, and trash cans should also be easy to reach, operate, and maintain. Lastly, adequate lighting, ventilation, and acoustics should create a comfortable and safe environment for all users.
