What are the best ways to demonstrate your technical skills for a promotion to team leader?

In my view, informing the manager about our work depends on these factors: 1. Organizational information infrastructure: If the organization has good infrastructure, the manager will be informed of our results. 2. Manager's characteristics: If the manager focuses on the big picture, provide a brief report after completing our work. 3. Organizational culture: Some organizations view real-time reports as insincere. In such cases, have the report ready and wait for the right time. 4. My organizational level: Higher ranks should focus on presenting only important matters.

Promotions in the technical field are not the same as in other areas. In most areas, meeting the requirements of your current role means you're ready for the next level. However, in technical fields, you must first demonstrate next-level competence before getting promoted. But how do we do this? Well, demonstrating competence at the next level is about strategically positioning yourself as ready and capable for the responsibilities and challenges of the next step in your career. It requires a proactive approach, a deep understanding of the next level, and the ability to communicate and demonstrate your readiness for those challenges effectively.

For me it was the following: Lead by Example: Consistently deliver high-quality work and mentor junior team members, showcasing your ability to guide and inspire others. Effective Communication: Clearly communicate ideas, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate discussions to foster collaboration and understanding within the team. Proactive Problem-Solving: Take initiative in identifying and resolving technical challenges, demonstrating your ability to think critically and find innovative solutions. Collaborative Approach: Work effectively with team members, contribute positively to team projects, and demonstrate your commitment to achieving collective goals.

In addition to all the above, team leadership is not just about being the most technical in the team. It is about being that one person who is able to rise above the technical operations of the team to connect the dots between what the team does and that of other teams (either as an input or output). Being able to positively influence and inspire other team members to consistently deliver value as a team. Being able to reflect the value the team brings to the entire pizza of value that the organization proposes to the end-customer. Being able to consistently reflect how the operations of the team fosters the focus area and strategy of the organization.

Seek leadership opportunities outside of your role: Look for opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities outside of your immediate role. This could involve volunteering for cross-functional projects, leading initiatives, or participating in committees or task forces. Proactively seeking leadership opportunities demonstrates your eagerness to contribute beyond your technical responsibilities.

I believe "consistently demonstrating technical and behavioural competencies in the workplace" is crucial for securing a promotion to Team Leader. In practice, this involves making a positive impact on results, possessing solid technical knowledge, maintaining clear and effective communication, taking on a leadership role within the team, showing initiative and taking on additional responsibilities, seeking proactive and alternative solutions, and looking for feedback for improvement are some of the characteristics that I have observed make a difference among team members. It is also important to clearly understand personal professional goals, and seek guidance on the promotion process within the organization to which?one?belongs.
