In my experience, I think it always good to try to identify and recognize your boss and their communication style. For me it was usually always delivered directly, and in person. My boss was the kind of person that would get up and walk over to have a talk. It was just his style. He rarely emailed. In my experience, eye to eye contact is good, smiling and acknowledgement can go a very long way, as well as sitting up straight and leaning in to the conversation. To me good body language shows interest and that you are present, curiuous and active in the moment.

Active listeners employees must turn off their devices, assure a healthy quite environment, breath and get calm in order to focus on the conversation, to avoid multitasking and to interrupt the speakers. Instead, try to visualize what the speakers are talking about, to cultivate patience and to wait till the speaker finish. Reminder: Never guess or judge, refrain and ask for permission for asking. Interruption might give mixed signal or wrong message.
