What are the best ways to communicate with your manager about your workload?

In my experience work becomes load when additional things apart from your KRA are added to your schedule. I think priority setting should be discussed with manager and expectations should be clear with proper timelines. While coming to closure on timelines with manager is must, we need to make sure that a communication on your daily KRA getting sidelined should also be highlighted.

The following points may be applied: 1. Never openly mention workload. 2. Always observe the mood of the manager before approaching (should be in a good mood or relaxed). 3. Take your time & use several days/weeks to appraise the manager about workload, in bits & pieces. 4. While on the subject, always mention the timelines you have achieved in the recent past. 5. Appreciate the dedication of team members too. It is beneficial to remember that your manager is also an employee & also has to take pressure from the senior management. Empathy will be more effective than creating a bad scene.

When discussing workload issues influenced by your own performance or that of a team member: - Take ownership of the situation - Evaluate specific challenges - Offer constructive solutions. - Provide context and examples to illustrate the impact of these challenges, and - Communicate respectfully with your manager, focusing on collaborative problem-solving. Be candid that the challenges do not mean complaining but a call for help. Come up with a plan from the action points and set follow-up meetings. Commit to deliver in the meantime
