It’s important to help the individuals on your team see a clear vision of where you want to go and then ensure they each know how their talents contribute to the vision. Support support support and get out of their way!

Start by building a trust fabric that the team has inputs into weaving, from the beginning. Never let an idea that is useful stay on the table, use it to move forward in a collaborative way.

Communicate the vision clearly and repeatedly. Beat a dead horse. Then empower and trust your team to follow the vision. The knowledge of the vision is the compass to guide the team. Just let them do their thing after that.

Ask everyone on the team to be open and honest without fear or retribution. That builds trust and generates great ideas. Although every idea will not be accepted or acted upon, it will create an atmosphere where everyone fes comfortable sharing their ideas.

I place a large emphasis on soft skills over hard skills and focus on diversity of backgrounds on my teams. Being curious-minded, adaptable, and able to discuss issues and conflict resolution can be more powerful than hard skills…especially in entry or early stage career roles where hard skills shouldn’t be the primary focus.

Hiring intelligent personnel who are always looking for ways to improve is best way to move your vision forward. Someone who is motivated, and pointed in the right direction, will take you exactly where you want to go, and beyond. You can clearly state your vision to an unmotivated person, and it will make no difference. Your employees have to be humble, introspective, and willing to voice their ideas. That is what it takes to build a strong team.

A great way to empower your team to be committed to the vision is to schedule quarterly brainstorming sessions wherein, ideas to move towards the vision are discussed. While this is tougher for larger companies, it can be scaled through technology and committed systems. When employees feel that they have a say in the process of moving towards the vision they are more committed to it. Additionally, it is helpful to explain the purpose for each change in the process and tying it to the vision statement which helps employees make sense. It can also be beneficial for managers to include Vision Enabling Rate as a KPI making vision related actions more visible and enabling organizations to also reward that performance.

The team will be empowered and committed if you engage them in developing the vision. Engage them in a facilitated workshop. You'll be setting a good example and you'll have far more committed team members.

Manage by objectives, make sure you define those objectives collaboratively, as they must understand the Why and how it relates to the vision. At the early stage, you may consider defining lead KPIs, and having short review cycles (weekly or less) to understand their perspective, listen to their suggestions, and mentor them through challenges, keeping an open mind and conscious space to make mistakes.

In a word, inclusion! It’s been my experience that teams that are made to feel included, embrace change, receptively. This is to say that any vision that a leader may have, should also include the team’s vision. Every team member is different when it comes to reward and recognition, so I recommend really understanding your team on how they feel valued. The more plugged in you are to your team, the more you will notice the big wins that are hiding in plain sight….like a team member who struggles with speaking out or another team member who tackled a skill that was more difficult for them. If you see that they have a natural talent with something, set them up to talk with another leader or volunteer them for a special program. While these big celebrations are important, also ensure you show appreciation and gratitude for daily work accomplishments.

If you’ve hired the right people, they will be able to see through recognition that is not authentic and genuine. Be authentic and genuine as recognized their value. Be able to give specifics with the recognition to reinforce the actions and behaviors you want to continue to see from your team.

I can’t state this enough. Nothing shows appreciation like reward, reinforcement and recognition! The lack of these 3 key elements have been directly linked to morale, burnout, resignation and/or quiet quitting. It still holds true too that people don’t care how much their leader knows nor will they follow them until they know how much their leader cares. And let’s be honest, we are a generation motivated by WIIFM (what’s in it for me)! However, it’s not enough for the 3Rs to exist. They should be with specificity (i.e., individually, group, openly, one on one, etc.) including details of the why as appropriate! You wouldn’t want to reward an entire group for the contribution of one individual nor if the individual (s) isn’t present!

Greet each team Member daily. Also thank them for their efforts before daily if they did their part support your vision. If the team Member can improve on supporting your vision, let the Member know how they can improve and ask how you can support them in their efforts.

Your vision is not as important as OUR (entire team) vision. The power of co-creation will provide others an opportunity to make your vision even bigger and focused. Usually, the project outcome is displayed during every meeting to remind each other the team members of the outcome. As the project progresses, it's important to update the outcome concisely to what your team is driving.

Share the vision, then listen. Don’t be a dictator - be someone who creates synergy. When people feel they are an important part of that vision, they will work harder to move towards it.

This mean’s actually talk to your team members. Meet them where they are don’t call them into your office and have your desk between them and you. That signals authority and they will be less likely to talk to you. Instead meet them at their places of work and talk to them like a normal human. It’s ok to laugh at work.

You have to find an effective method to communicate how important their contribution is to the team's vision (earlier and required step, has to be team's vision). Getting to know them and what energizes them is critical. Build a genuine trusting relationship. Then, in collaboration with the team, set challenging and obtainable goals You have to be genuine in your efforts. The team members should have a positive feeling of investment in the vision. This has to be fueled by the leader on a regular basis. You also have to be fair and equitable, each team member must be functional, or the whole team will be dragged done. Praise in public, council in private.

People act differently when they see the numbers on a screen, make sure to reflect a gaming environment by displaying a progress chart of all the members of a team next to each other, as this will boost their competitive spirit and push them to go beyond their comfort zone, and realize how performance is assessed and compared and rewarded/penalized.

Don’t be so married to your vision that you fail to recognize if it is flawed, missing critical information, or needs to change. Listen to the feedback and perspective of your team to identify where you may have blind spots or are failing to articulate the vision in a way that can be understood by all.

Clearly defining a Culture of Excellence- which values creativity, inclusion and helping employees to reach their personal goals and aspirations often has more value than a big raise. Employees want to know that they matter and their ideas are useful and implemented when they provide a path to the vision and goals. I make a personal committment to each of my Team members. They may not see themselves poised for growth within the organization and perhaps have entirely different goals in life. I am committed to assisting them in achieving their vision even if this means leaving, eventually. The trade-off? Just be the best that you can be while working with me. Team growth is based on each individuals personal growth. Encourage this!

A team that’s already committed to your vision, I would say the foundation has already been laid! This is an advantage so now, it’s a matter of aligning the team to its vision. You may achieve this by learning and knowing the team’s strengths and weaknesses! Place greater focus on their strengths as opposed to their weaknesses. I make this statement as you can more easily compensate for a weakness than you can for a strength! Next, Set clear, attainable goals and clear expectations for achieving them. However, the team should be included in this process. This will ensure unison of focus. It will also undergird the execution for a more efficient and effective team performance and overall customer experience!
