There are three fundamental notions that any aspiring PE Executive should embrace : 1. It is a VERY long term game … it takes 10 to 15 years to make a good investor, 20+ to build a track record, and 10 to 12 years to fully realise a given PE fund. 2. The quality of the platform you join as well as the vintage year in which you enter the industry are far more important influencers of your ??successes?? than you own merits and hard work ! So focus on the quality of the Firm you join in the long run more than for example short term financial terms or lifestyle. 3. Last but not least make your career choices that lead to maximising your learning in the long term. Being obsessed with your learning curve will serve you well but be patient !

Knowing the basics is foundational, but to truly stand out, immerse yourself in the PE ecosystem. Attend industry events, engage with PE professionals on LinkedIn, participate in case competitions, and seek internships or part-time roles in related fields. This proactive approach demonstrates not only your knowledge but your passion and commitment to the industry. Networking and practical experience complement academic learning, providing a richer understanding of PE dynamics and opportunities to showcase your potential to future employers.

Understanding the fundamentals of Private Equity is a crucial prerequisite before entering an internship or job interview. Some key basics include familiarity with the structure of a PE fund, comprehension of Limited Partners and General Partners roles, understanding terms like Contribution, Distribution, Net Asset Value (NAV), Proceeds, Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Multiple of Invested Capital (MOIC), Carried Interest, Management Fees, Dry Powder, GP Catch-up, Waterfall Distribution, Recallable Return of Capital (RROC), and more. It is essential to grasp how the Private Equity market operates and discern its distinctions from the Public Markets.

Networking is essential to enter the PE industry given it is a very “discreet” sector both when it comes to advertising open position but also in terms of overall number of opportunities. Also needs can vary quickly (every 6 months) given they highly depend on the market and turnover which are unpredictable. So the best way to both be aware of the latest positions openings but also be on the radar is to network. With headhunters who are the best in the industry but even more critically with junior PE executives working for the firms you target. They are the key ! They will help you understand if you are a good fit, push you into the system, help you prepare interviews and last but not least influence the decision internally !

With my personal experience I want to give you some tips how to search and connect with the right people on LinkedIn - Search for the designation of people with filters on companies you want to work for like 'Private Equity Associate' - Connect with HR of companies by searching like 'Goldman Sachs in HR' in search box of LinkedIn - Add people who are working in PE domain Join WhatsApp and Telegram groups to have a networking with PE professionals, join webinars, go to events related to PE

I spent five years helping Wall Street firms recruit college graduates. First, as much as PE firms want to hire new employees who are well-grounded in the fundamentals of finance, they seek employees who show a talent for learning. So, to enhance this quality, show them that you read broadly, and not just in the world of finance. Read "Foreign Affairs", read articles from different law reviews, read scientific studies on new drugs, etc. Show these PE firms that you are an intellectual adventurer and not afraid to explore fields that might be a little over your head. Second, become skilled at writing. Write every day, and, most important, read skilled writers every day. For example, read Christopher Hitchens' essays.

To excel in Private Equity as a recent graduate, prioritize continuous learning beyond formal education. While college provides a foundation, explore diverse resources for deeper understanding. The best candidates grasp Private Equity from deal sourcing to adding value at the portfolio company level. Seek practical experience, develop analytical skills, and build a strong network. Embrace adaptability and resilience to navigate the dynamic industry landscape effectively.
