What are the best ways to build and maintain relationships with clients as a training facilitator?

It can be tempting to jump to what you can offer as a facilitator rather than ask, listen and absorb what the client may want. Sitting back a little and asking more gets you the same benefits as a manager with their team member - namely more information to get a best fit solution as well as making them feel valued and heard. They’ll be more engaged by you as a result. We also sometimes feel that asking will make us seem less knowledgable and we strive to seem credible too soon. Credibility also comes however from making them feel you are curious and interested in tailoring your expertise.

Some will want the ‘headlines’ of what we offer up front, some will want to know the details of the process first. Some will want energy in a fast delivery, others much more comfortable with silence. Adapting to that will mean rapport is built more readily. A simple way to start that process is to think of whether they seem task focussed or relationship/people focussed. That will give you a good idea of where to focus your words to appeal to them most.
