When working with clients around executive functioning and/or prioritizing, I like to explore with them what are heavy lift tasks and light lift tasks. Heavy lifts usually need more external support (i.e. help from others, structures within the environment). Light lifts are tasks we can do more easily on our own. Once you determine what’s heavy or light, this can help you determine what you do first and how you do it.

Managing your calendar proactively is key in setting boundaries. I put in dinners, working out, holiday shopping and anything else in my life that I want to make time for. By putting these big rocks down, I can more effectively plan my work and still do the personal things tat matter. Obviously some weeks will be more hectic than others but planning ahead ensures there is some balance.

Finding a mentor or offering to be a peer mentor is a solid step that pays off really well down the road. It is also helpful to join communities of other professionals so you can grow your network. For me, one of the best steps was to attend regular online webinars that allow for collaboration or break out rooms so I can meet other education professionals and establish relationships.
