What is the best way to troubleshoot a lathe tailstock?

The only accurate way that I know of to check a tailstock is with a laser. You need to check barrel travel in 2 axes with the centerline of the spindle (that is, assuming the spindle is square), but also two-axis positioning of the tailstock casting. Turning a bar between centers is the only way a home shop can determine if they have tailstock problems. Fixing those problems can get very expensive.
