An important aspect to consider is the automation of such testing. If a system is compatible with other systems at some time, you should be able to execute the same tests again to assess the compatibility everytime the system is amended. This puts some constraints on your tests like their maintenability or the ability to be repeated programmatically. It also puts some constraints on the development of your system itself by using for example test driven approach like Red Green Refactor cycle.
