Understand the business sounds a bit inwardly focused -- I'd say understand your existing and new markets first -- then focus more on how the business can meet the market challenges.

It's really important to understand the business that you're in, especially where your organization is deriving revenue, and what your mission is. A simple example of this is in education - the industry I work in. Some universities derive all of their revenue from student tuition and fees, and are "all-in" on student experience, because that's their sole purpose. Others have a strong emphasis on research, and drive the majority of their revenue from grants. Most are somewhere in the middle. That's relevant to IT, because if you are at an institution that is heavily focused on research, prioritizing research needs and aligning IT with a CRO is going to be essential to success. So, what drives YOUR organization? How can IT support that?

IT-Strategy is all about thinking, planning & implementing operational strategies to either maximize profitability, expand the business or leverage services for customers. For example, creating website, providing the customers the ability to choose products & offering services for payment directly from their bank or through credit cards, getting the order shipped, offering them a way to track their order, delivering it to their door, instead of having the only option to walk in to the store & shop. Offering them the option to also edit, cancel or return the order as well. All of these falls under IT-Strategy.

Thinking strategically involves adopting a long-term perspective for IT solutions. Develop a vision for how these solutions will support the business in the future, assessing risks, costs, and benefits. Be attuned to emerging technologies and innovations that may impact your strategy, and plan to leverage or adapt to them. This forward-thinking approach ensures the sustainability and effectiveness of your IT initiatives.

A business’s strategic objectives will almost certainly be cross functional, and likely multi year. And your thinking should be also.

Long-term thinking is obviously an important skill to have. One one thing to watch out for is to not go too far. Sometimes people tend to immediately jump to 20-30 years ahead. At that point you run the risk of creating science fiction (which is not a bad thing per se, of course ;) )

It's important for a company to have a long-term vision that aligns with its own planning. However, some companies create visions that span several decades. If you want to be known as a strategic IT thinker it is important to do a lot of research. You need to understand the market requirements, the software and technology solutions available, the vendors in the market, and what others in the market are doing. You need to understand where technology is going and the benefits of those moves (if any). This understanding then needs to be articulated into a long term but agile IT Strategy with a roadmap attached. It needs to show how it will benefit stakeholders and not just be an exercise in vanity. It should also address the most important consideration which is "why" before you decide "how". You need to measure your success and be able to explain why initiatives you create are successful.

Being authentic and genuine about people and their growth, as an organization is a collective of people and having strategies and culture is great but caring and empathizing with people in a world that’s increasingly becoming robotically autonomous will start to erode and chip away at the edges of peoples mindset as not everyone has the ability to be a part of a learning continuum to keep moving up the value chain as strategies evolve. This would get better traction in the near term for current strategies and sustain thru the evolution of change within the organization.
