It has been my experience that safety among close nit groups of workers can be both very important to them. This is a great situation. On the other hand, in other groups, safety is almost unacknowledged. Sometimes these groups who have been working together have allowed themselves to forget about the safety of their "partners", and allow them to do dangerous things over and over again because they have "seen what they can do". This is a really unfortunate state of affairs for people who otherwise would "take a bullet" for them in any other situation.

It is important to retrain people who have gone through life risking things without really realizing it, and make younger less experienced people who may feel invincible or who are just not aware of what is possible. The comment about mentorship is a great one for this latter group. The former group however is a more management owned issue to solve.
