If collaborating with other people, I make sure they understand the logic of my folder-tree, if this is not the case, we might not be able to find documents someone else saved there. I go through the files manually. I actually don’t trust programs or software in doing this. I recently bought a new hard drive to save duplicates as a backup. I wouldn’t do this in a cloud, even if it probably is safer to do that.

I always start files with a strong naming system that needs to be followed, this should eliminate duplicates in the first place. Having said that I prefer that nothing is deleted as you are likely to loose important information at some point. Merge files if you have to or add to the title edit 1 /edit 2 etc
