What is the best way to describe your experience with databases?

Database is intimately bound to your application project so its design should not be underestimated, wether it's about multilingual support, performance, scalability or security. Trying to fix an improperly designed database already in production will take more time and efforts (not to mention side effects) than taking the appropriate time to think about it at the early stage and involve experts if needed. Make sure to use the most appropriated database provider for your application type and that you have the appropriated scalabilty & backup/restoration plans especially if it's in the Cloud.

In the same way that most projects require some sort of outline in order to be run effectively, one can get the most out of databases if you set up some sort answer key/user manual. Often times if these are provided it is in a very general sense, and setting something as simple as an Excel spreadsheet up with user-friendly terms tailored to the primary audience can help familiarize yourself and others with the databases being used.

Documentation! Document your work and flow of thought. Write your database code in plain and simple code. Readability over compiling speed? Maybe. Create a standard. Standardize the thing. Is it "Part#", "Part No", "Part num", "Part_Number"? Settle on one. Backup your data tables OFTEN. Direct file read with data-entry/update work? Or scatter data to memory variables, do the editing and then write them back to disk? In the end what matters is preserving the data. It needs to be readable, cleaned, normalized, stripped of "garbage characters" which can happen with data corruption. Duplicate the data and check it for useability. Is the file readable? Is it slow to open? Is it slow to close? Can I open it with Excel? Are all fields represented?

In my current role, I have been part of my organization's adoption of Salesforce for use of metric tracking and data management. Part of this process was an initial trial period where our Salesforce Administrator set myself, my supervisor, and one of our organizations instructors (very much our front line, so to speak) loose in Salesforce with a list of functions and the processes to walk us through executing them. This "cheat sheet", as it were, was what inspired my current project of a codex for the Data and Information System of Illinois (DAISI), which is one of the main databases we utilize across the Adult Education realm of my organization.
