What is the best way to address soil compaction during site grading?

Everyone apeak about soil engineering, well the must inportant its the local of the soil compaction; If is a drying or raining zone, the remaining is only falow the process compaction procedures and don't forget the safety applications.

If the available Soil within the project vicinity is of poor quality it needs some soil improvement process to make it suitable for grading. 3. The Soil is to be filled in layers not exceeding 200 to 300 mm in thickness and compacted at optimum moisture content 4. Regular cores are to be taken for testing to find the optimum compaction level. 5. Ideally, where the depth of filling is higher the grading is to be exposed for one rainy season for natural compaction. 6. The area where construction vehicles move regularly will achieve better compaction than the compaction done with rollers.

In the world I work in, we expend a much greater effort trying to obtain proper compaction. 95% + Said differently, we want everything compacted to the max so we can build roads, houses and buildings upon it without the risk of settlement or slipping. In fact it's required. The only place that I can think of where over compaction is an issue would be; root zones, topsoil respread that requires vegetation, drainfields, or bio filters and rain gardens. Maybe I'm missing something?

First and foremost, soil compaction is done under areas to be developed like: roads, infrastructure facilities and areas where facilities will be built. It is required to stabilize the areas where these facilities will be constructed, ensuring that such facilities are safe for human occupancy/usage. So, excavation and tilling of such areas are out of the question. We had a task of removing agricultural topsoil from a 12 hectare site, in preparation for planting a woodland. Initially we spent a lot of our time using dedicated haul routes, using low pressure tyre dump trucks, which proved difficult due to dust and was also uneconomical in terms of time and fuel. We decided the best option was to break up the whole area post excavation using a shaker raker. The final outcome was very successful with the woodland progressing very well, from mostly whips, plus some translocated coppiced hazel, mature trees. An award winner, and part of the M2 mitigation scheme. Sometimes, the best of intentions can be the worst solution.

To achieve this, I ensure good grading is done in all my sites, adequate levels are determined to ensure good drainage around and on site and use of suitable machinery for compaction from heavy duty ones to improvised tools.

Pre requisite of Soil compaction is first check the SBC accordingly you can decide compaction method - it's totally depend on soil chemistry and characteristics.... Prior to select method of compaction - first you need to disclose why and what is your main purpose and utilisation- Whether Compaction is required for small vehicle movement or heavy cranes or for just human would be walk .Figure out first your need then decide and select the compaction methods ....

1- Clean the construction site from all topsoil layer like mixture of sand, silt, clay and broken down organic matter or dirt. 2- Follow the recommended minimum compaction thickness and percentage by code. 3- Generally, adequate density is specified as a relative density for the top 150 mm (6 inches) of subgrade of not less than 95% of maximum density determined in the laboratory. In fill areas, subgrade below the top 150 mm (6 inches) is often considered adequate if it is compacted to 90% relative density.

4. Implement raised beds: Raised beds create a loose, well-drained growing environment, reducing the likelihood of soil compaction. They also provide better aeration and water drainage, which helps maintain soil structure. 5. Mulch the soil: Applying organic mulch, such as straw or wood chips, helps protect the soil from compaction caused by heavy rain or irrigation. Mulch acts as a barrier, reducing the impact of water droplets hitting the soil surface. 6. Add organic matter: Incorporating organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, into the soil improves its structure and porosity, making it less prone to compaction. Organic matter also enhances soil fertility and promotes beneficial microbial activity.

Its important and should alway consider conducting the appropriate test such as the FDT to find the right way to compact the soil, the level of compaction and the properties soil, the needed mixture to attain desired compaction.

This is only my opinion. Depending how deep it is to bedrock on rough grade,I know I know your all saying why the heck is he talking about bed rock! I’ll tell ya depending how close you are don’t you think if your within say 10 for example that grading above , scraping , equipment vibration might cause some fishers or cracks which has weakened the integrity of the naturally compacted earth. That’s what I think about. I think after rough cut, start packing with moisture condition. If it’s 20 or more feet to bedrock and also depending type of soil you’re working with to me it’s not such a worry until it’s time to worry. I believe if it’s taken care of on the front side and will be less warranty claims and more money in your pocket!

La deformación del suelo por compactación durante el proceso de nivelación es normal, se deben tener en cuenta factores como la humedad, la diferencia de volumen entre el material suelto y compactado y la compactación del material subyacente.
