I am definitely a fan of SMART goals and it is what helped lead to my team's success. Start out with something small that everyone can understand and then get excited to see the team achieve more of its goals. I used a poster board to communicate these goals first in a huddle and then where the team would meet. The two most important parts of SMART to me always are specific and achievable. Make sure that is communicated to your team and have their commitment.

SMART Goals really tells the story here. It is important also to recognize that once your goals are established, you cannot sit back even for a minute. It would then be time to establish new goals. I recommend to my clients to always have both short and long term achievable goals. If you see that your goals are not being met over a reasonable period of time, it is never unwise to modify your goals to become achievable.

I often say, "Goals are dreams with a deadline." Reaching that goal requires you to reverse engineer the goal by continually breaking it down to its most minor component. Then, figure out if the most immediate activity in front of you will get you to your dream. Ex. I want to make $1M this year. That's $83.3k per month, $20,833 per week, and $520 per hour (40 hr. week). Is it realistic that you can generate $520 per hour? Yes/No? More/Less? Now, decide the most important activity to generate the desired result. Now, look at your team. Who has to do what to get this done? Not tracking your goal? It doesn't matter what tools you use if the activity doesn't support the end result. Elephants are eaten one bite at a time.

All of the examples above are great and all have a purpose in business. To simplify you don’t need a fancy analysis template, ultimately you need to know three things 1. What is the desired outcome 2. Intentional steps you are going to take and 3. How will you know when you have achieved that outcome. When creating an action plan, start with the outcome (and date to achieve by) and reverse engineer the activities/steps you need to take each week to get there. When planning how much time it will take, put your estimate and double it. Life happens, things get in the way. Set yourself up for success not stress.

Action plans are extremely helpful when it comes to execution and accountability. Regular meetings are useful to keep everyone up to date and accountable. If you have team, using a project management software is ideal as it allows you to easily communicate and stay up to date In between meetings.

Small business owners often overlook what is working in favor of pursuing a bunch of new and random opportunities. Small businesses should assess where they are currently getting their customers. What has worked well? Double down on what is working. Additionally, existing customers who know and love your business are a great source of new business- they often adjacent to customers that are very much like them. Spend time making it worthwhile for your existing customers to be your biggest advocates. Moreover, upsell to those customers. It is easier to sell more to existing customers than to find new customers.

You can have all the analysis, matrices, goal setting sheets, and action steps. If you aren’t in the right mindset, the others are moot. When you are in the growth mindset, acknowledge the fears, the doubts, etc….that are coming up for you. If you live in a scarcity and fear based mindset you will procrastinate, lose faith in yourself and ultimately take no action. Start with mindset and then take action. What are you waiting for?

For me building your network is vitally important, so often I see businesses saying to each other "I've seen this opportunity that's right up your street, you should go for it." You'll only see so many opportunities yourself, building your network increases that capacity exponentially
