Therefore RCTs have two groups of treatment and experimental groups. Usually to remove any sample bias double blind experiment is usually used. Take an example you want to measure the effectiveness of an intervention in a village. To do so you will compare two villages wherein one will include intervention and the other will not have any intervention. Further people at both villages don't know about who is getting the intervention. Needless to say both villages are similar in all aspects example demographics etc with sample size more than 30.

Now it is quite useful to go for a both on line and offline surveys. I would recommend to have the pilot study face to face as we will be able to get the feedback for each of the questions in our instrument as the participant answers. Always go for as much samples that can be done easily

It is always better to have an idea about the different statistical tools that we are going to use for our full research. Our instrument needs to be feasible for those. Pilot study needs to take care of that . So we need to decide whether we are going for factor analysis, conjoint analysis etc for example before going for pilot study.

For statistial purpose it should be atleast 30 where our target population is going to be in thousands. Since one of the purpose of the pilot study is testing the instrument, ideally interview of the participants with the questionaire is preferred so that we can understand whether the questions are clear. Always get the feedback from the participantsand we can revise the questions accordingly. Pilot study is also a feasibility study so we can understand the requirements and challenges and do the necessary correction. Based on the feedback refine the study design, procedure and instruments.
