What are the best strategies for migrating to a new web framework?

An important aspect of assessing one's needs is to determine if a framework is necessary to achieve one's end goal. In my experience, something that can be achieved without a framework is often more robust and less reliant on dependencies which may expose your code to vulnerabilities in the long run if not managed proactively.

When considering a web framework migration, key aspects include assessing the alignment of your current framework with the goals and requirements of your web application. Examine the strengths and weaknesses, evaluating its support for development workflows, testing, deployment, and maintenance. Consider compatibility with the latest technologies, ease of learning and usage, and the vibrancy of the community and documentation. Prioritize factors like ease of development, comprehension, and portability over raw performance. Future-proofing the application is crucial, with performance considerations focusing on scaling factors and code simplicity for a faster and efficient application.

As software experts, we do not have the leisure of rushing towards the next shiny thing when making a change of this nature. We must consider all shades of that decision and dedicate time to formulating the right questions. In what ways will this new tool help, simplify, accelerate, or improve our current development process or product? Which areas will be compromised by using this tool? Only by truly understanding the risks and compromises can we properly assess the advantages that the framework, as a tool, will bring to us.

The primary factors for me to take into account when choosing a web framework are ease of use, ease of integration into pre-existing code and probably most important of all, the extent of and user-friendliness of the framework documentation. The latter has a significant impact on the former two, and poor documentation of a framework very often makes it excessively difficult to learn and integrate it into an existing project.

As with almost every process, the proper use of Git is essential when implementing a migration. The use of Git and GitHub allows for effective team communication and divisions of roles and responsibilities during the process. Meticulous attention to the framework documentation is also an immeasurably important part of the planning.

Test Driven Development (TDD) is by far the most productive way of development and in this case migration. When testing frameworks are employed and test code is written strategically before each step of the migration, potential problems or unforeseen incompatibilities can be identified right at the outset and addressed almost in real-time.

If possible, consider making the production deployment as impact-free as possible. One approach could be to execute a parallel deployment alongside the current production environment and progressively redirect more user traffic and demand to the new one. This will provide the scenario to observe the true results in a production environment, while still maintaining the possibility of a quick rollback or quick fixes without affecting either the user experience or business continuity.

A "post-mortem" of a migration and subsequent deployment is generally always a good idea. It is important to determine specific metrics of success (or failure) during the planning stage of the migration so that these can be evaluated at this stage. Communication and celebration of success should involve all stakeholders including clients involved in beta testing. This serves as an important team-building and client relations exercise. Involving beta testers in the success celebration could for instance lead to passive (word of mouth) marketing of the newly improved (post-migration) product.

Some key factors that may ensure success in the long run after a big change like this are to continuously monitor and measure the running metrics, check for possible downtimes and bottlenecks to address them promptly, and tighten the contribution process while the team is adjusting to the new development methodologies that frameworks often introduce.
