CIPD’s 2022 resourcing and talent planning report found that 75% of respondents reported taking action to improve employer brand within their organisation in the last year, and this rose to 84% for larger organisations. According to respondents, beyond pay and benefits, perception of employer , career development opportunities and organisational values are the most important aspects of employer brand for attracting candidates A key part of an organisation’s culture and values are the ethical standards that the employer upholds through the practice of its employees. Employer brand is therefore influenced by corporate social responsibility and how the business impacts wider society.

In an article we published in JBE a few years ago, we discussed CSR congruence: the alignment between the employer's CSR and the employee's ESR (employee social responsibility). The congruence is critical to employees' sense of purpose, satisfaction, and retention. As such, it is essential to recruit people with similar values and purpose so that they, too, can become part of your CSR journey. Holistic CSR is about embedding it throughout the organisation; you must have like-minded people to do this.

3 Engage new hires with your CSR culture and activities

Once you have hired the right candidates, you need to engage them with your CSR culture and activities from day one. This means providing them with a comprehensive and inspiring onboarding program that introduces them to your CSR vision, values, policies, and programs. Integrating CSR into your hiring and onboarding processes is not enough. You also need to provide ongoing CSR training and development to your employees, to help them enhance their CSR knowledge, skills, and performance. This means offering them regular and relevant CSR learning opportunities, such as workshops, webinars, courses, or certifications, that cover topics such as CSR trends, best practices, standards, and tools. It also means creating a supportive and collaborative CSR environment, where employees can exchange ideas, experiences, and feedback, and learn from each other and from external experts.

Finally, you need to recognize and reward CSR achievements and behaviors, to motivate and retain your CSR leaders. Additionally, you can reward your employees' CSR excellence with incentives, such as bonuses, promotions, recognition awards, or career opportunities, that reflect their CSR contribution and value.
