In my experience, getting to personally know people in the demographics you are interested in reaching is far more valuable than analytics. You won't know what common ground you share if you only see your audience (or clients, customers, buyers, market, etc) as just data and dollar signs. Approach each interaction with integrity and authenticity, and let them know that you'd like to hear their perspective on your topic of choice. People like to talk about their opinions, especially when they think they have a way to make the things they want come to fruition, so be upfront about that. Maybe you can end up helping each other with this approach.

One of the most important factors for building trust and credibility with your community is to be authentic and transparent . Don't pretend to be someone or something you are not. One thing I've found helpful when interacting with diverse groups is to accept feedback with an open mind. Every person within each group is unique, but if you see several comments agreeing that an aspect of a post was insensitive or if commenters are engaging and express frustration that they're not being listened to or respected, they're not going to interact with that organization or company much longer unless that changes. Attempts to lean in and listen to the community are noticed and appreciated, so I recommend that everyone approach each interaction as though their reputation depends on it, because it might. And please, always remember to consider the impact of your words, for that is often far more important than your intent.

5 Collaborate and partner

Finally, to connect with a diverse community, you need to collaborate and partner with others who share your vision and values. Find and reach out to influencers, leaders, advocates, or organizations that have a strong presence and reputation in your community. In my experience, carelessness often cuts deeper than cruelty. As a disabled person, there have been many times where I have been excluded from groups by default: there were no accommodations provided, nor was there any way to request them privately. It was either sit this activity out or, if I chose to go, I could get accused of seeking preferential treatment or of "making a scene" by asking for a specific type of chair or location of seating. I think some people overlook the fact that A LOT of people live with unseen disabilities everyday, and instead choose to think that we are "faking it". Give people the benefit of the doubt when they say they "don't feel up to" something and listen to them. You might be surprised by what they say.
