After the lesson, I gave him a list of the questions he asked so that he could evaluate them prior to our post-observation discussion. When we met I asked what he had thought about the collected data. He said that all of his questions were lower level. I asked what would do differently and he said that he would intentionally develop and implement higher level questions. Lesson learned through data.

I agree with coaching being a collaborative process. The most important part to consider is the teachers’s style of learning, much like we do an any other student. For example, I learn best through a coach modeling for me, watching me in action and then providing constructive feedback. What am I doing well? What changes can I make that match my personality and teaching methodology? Conversations need to take place which include empathy and understanding.

This is because an essential aspect of coaching is measuring the learner’s progress in knowledge acquisition targeted via coaching, and the instructions to overcome the challenges to progress. Therefore, constructive feedback is the key to ensuring sound learning. The feedback must certainly be aligned to the assessments set at different points in the lesson. Significantly, every assessment must be followed by feedback. To cut it short, the purpose of a lesson cannot be met unless coaching, assessments, and feedback are systematically aligned.
