Trust me, I know, I'm an English major, and they brainwashed me. But one of the best tactics you can use is to NARRATE YOUR THOUGHTS. The first sentence should connect to the second sentence, the second to the third, the third to the fourth... like a chain. Tell the story of what you're thinking and how you're interpreting something. If you do this correctly, it'll take three or four revisions to get your narrative right. Do the hard work of narrating your thoughts.

For instance, you could describe your study in terms suggestive of a physical journey ("this path"; "an unexpected turn"; "a road block"; etc.), or in the botanical or agricultural language ("the seed of an idea"; "the components sprouted"; "a flourishing field"), or in terms of the human body ("whether the organization's problems were more than skin-deep"; "the heartbeat of the community"), or... etc. etc. My main tip here would be to pick one metaphor at a time rather than mixing them, & to be thoughtful & intentional about the ideas & images they suggest to the reader.
