As soon as the metric becomes the goal, then the metric becomes useless. The metric is a data point in evaluating success, it is not a measurement of success. For example, if there's a heuristic that says most successful basketball players are taller than 6'2" (188cm), the goal should not be get taller if you want to improve your basketball game. Metrics, in isolation, mean nothing and have no correlation to success without context.
