What are the best practices for tracing requirements throughout the system development process?

Although It takes some effort to establish and maintain traceability between requirements (and also between requirements and other work products), the effort is well worth it. Traceability ensures that requirements are aligned with the stakeholders needs, while also functioning as a barrier to gold plating, putting unnecessary requirements in evidence. Finally, traceability helps to promptly identify the requirements and work products that are affected by changes in one or more requirements/work products related to the system.

A good traceability of the requirements starts with a good Project Breakdown Structure(s) (PBS) and allocation to the source of the requirements. Especially when you make a project where you have to deal with a lot of Stakeholders. Allocation of the requirements to the PBS must be logical and consistent.

Defining traceability may be the difference between success and failure in developing complex systems. When planning a complex development, usually a framework is used in such way different layers of abstraction takes place to guide the development from the very beginning of the realization phase until the later phases of the design. Defining traceability is what ensures regardless of in which abstraction level the work is being deployed, the business and customer need remain cohesive and, at the end of integration, verification and validation phase, a product or system will behave as expected and developed within a reasonable cost, generating value to the stakeholders.

It's important to remember that traceability, along with all other steps in product development and project management, is a choice. It may seem obvious to many, that traceability is important, but following through on the necessary steps to create the level of traceability that you need to be successful can sometime fall to the wayside of because of assumptions about everyone's understanding across your organization. Creating a definition for traceability not only lays out an expectation and standard to strive for but it also can be an opportunity to improve communication. This definition could change as your product or organization grows so don't be afraid to ask yourself or let others ask, "does this definition still work for us?"

También está la trazabilidad entre requisitos y las pruebas que demuestran su implementación. La trazabilidad es imprescindible: sin ella nunca sabremos cuanto trabajo está cubierto ya, cuanta especificación se ha materializado en producto. Además, la trazabilidad servirá para tasar el impacto de los cambios. Sin trazabilidad no podríamos saber cuánto trabajo está hecho ni podríamos saber cuánto cuesta cambiar lo hecho.

Good luck implementing traceability between requirements without using a proper Requirements Management tool. Unless the total number of requirements are very small, it is just not viable to establish and maintain traceability using a simple spreadsheet. Things can easily get out of control when you consider an environment with thousands of requirements, dozens of people working collaboratively and changes happening all the time.

Establishing traceability Matrix with MBSE and requirements management tool is just first step ,many tools provide options like in IBM called it as "suspect links" features which really brings the value to the overall project in terms of tracking changes and its impact on the several components, If used effectively this features will add value for the initial effort spent on traceability.Tracebility will be useful for both proving that one has followed ASPICE standard also in the Impact analysis . But certain rules need to be implemented between different modules which allows engineer to link the different artificats in a correct order and avoid later rework of wrong linking

Traceability matrix is just not mere requirement links further down process. Traceability matrix ned to contain certain mandatory attributes (characteristics) of the requirements like type, safety critical, normal or robustness, verification method to name a few. When a project decides on the essential elements of traceability matrix all lifecycle phases should be considered and provisions made to include them as part of the matrix.

Technology builds upon itself in complexity and thus so does the complexity of requirements grow too. Without comprehensive management tools you lose transparency into your process. However; I'd like to note that there is a word that I think is missing in talking about traceability here, accountability. A requirement ID should be unique and not reutilizable, even in the case that its associated requirement is deleted. This practice is very important to avoid inconsistent references to requirements that would compromise traceability.

As mentioned in chapter 1 before starting to establish traceability plan it. And yes, defining identifiers for sure is one thing to be defined. Once properly defined the use of identifiers shall be reviewed along with the trace links.

They must also be concrete. Once established, they do not change. I was on a team where the project was so large there were thousands of requirements. We would create our tests with traceability to the requirements and then every couple of years the systems engineers would decide that the requirements needed different identifiers. The time and frustration associated with updating all of the traceability items outweighed any benefit in renaming the requirements.

Identifiers impose responsibility towards evading confusion from the start to the end of the mission. They should be all unique, and in occasional instances, where they must be shared owing to a common origin of purpose, the overlap must be documented on a control document. Identifiers are also an opportunity to mark requirements are per logical attributes to make it convenient for the mission.

When managing requirements traceability, it's important to be cautious about changing identifiers once we establish them at key project milestones such as the System Requirements Review (SRR). Once we assign and baseline identifiers, they should remain constant to preserve the integrity of the traceability process. If requirements are added, removed, or evolve, avoid altering the original identifiers. Instead, use annotations such as "reserved" for unused or deleted identifiers or cross-references for evolved requirements.

To provide an example of bidirectional trace: Forward trace from functions to physical solutions is key in identifying orphaned functions: those without an allocated solution. F→P forward trace also highlights over-allocation: when a function is allocated to multiple solutions, leading to forced redundancy, which wastes resources if not identified. Conversely, backward traceability from solutions to functions highlights orphaned components: elements without a clear functional purpose, prompting a re-evaluation of their necessity. Both approaches are necessary in streamlining the design, ensuring every component and function is justified and efficiently allocated.

Good requirements management tools are going to register bidirectional traceability automatically as soon as traceability is registered in one of the directions, which is another one of the many advantages of using such a tool.

The importance of maintaining this bidirectional traceability cannot be understated. In particular when working on projects and systems that involve more people and multiple facets of the system you're developing within, you will find that individuals will have a bulk of knowledge at the level that they expect to work at. By having a method for maintaining and documenting bidirectional traceability each individual can gain that holistic view of what is being built, what they're all working towards accomplishing. I hate to use this word in fear of sounding trite but it allows for greater synergy when working on projects without each person needing to have expertise in every part and piece of your system.

Bi directional traceability should be built in within the requirement development process as this aids to resolve most recurring problems of trace holes, weak links, one way trace only and also gives a a very good understanding of the maturity of requirements definition process.

It is essential to maintain not only the traceability but also the status of each requirement updated throughout the project life cycle. Factors such as development progress, verification outcome, or risk level are important to consider.

Not keeping updates current (or not communicating updates to relevant stakeholders) poses a risk of basing decisions on outdated information, leading to errors and conflicts. This can cause rework, delays, and even potential system failures. Updates should be tied to the configuration management process, ensuring that any change in the system's configuration is properly vetted.

Traceability shall be updated as soon as * an item is added * an item is altered * a non-valid trace is detected It should not be like we have a released collection of stakeholder requirements and we have a released collection of system requirements so let us draw some links in-between.

Keep traceability up to date is an important task that cannot be neglected. Is well known that customer and business needs change time to time and a requirement may not make sense anymore. Replace this out of date requirement to a more accurate one can propagate impacts both horizontally and vertically, so the regular review of traceability ensures the requirements will drive the value expected by stakeholders as well as requirements linked to each other are still necessary and cohesive.

Manage complex systems without a robust traceability tool is, for sure, at least a huge and overwhelming challenge. A good traceability tool allows us to see the bigger picture when dealing with several requirements across several abstraction levels. From the realization of a system up to the integration, validation and verification phase, the traceability tool helps us to keep everything together, communicate the business strategy through the requirements update and review architectures, deploy the efforts of the team as well as support other development processes such as FMEAs, HAZIP, HAZOP etc.

In my experience, some tools are better than others. If there is flexibility in what tool can be used, it’s worthwhile doing a comparison and undertake trials with different tools to determine which one is best for your company/project. If for example, suppliers are using or have experience in particular tools that may guide you to a particular choice.

The important thing to keep in perspective is traceability is very important part of requirement development phase and shall needs to planned well keeping mind all the needs of development lifecycle activities.

A quoi bon créer des systèmes qui ne fonctionnent pas ou qu'à moitié... Regardez autour de vous et vous trouverez forcément des exemples de système ne correspondant qu'à moitié à votre besoin.

The most important thing is to find a good methodology. The topic of traceability is not easy to understand for many people and is, therefore, sometimes not taken seriously enough. That's why I always try to illustrate traceability graphically. This can be done using a model or in software tools. It is also always important to me to check the traceability in reviews. The correlation of the traceability often then becomes clear.

Traceability is not only an important but mandatory method to validate any requirement in a system development. Traceability is not only limited between parent requirements to child requirements in any hierarchy but shall be implemented between functions and respective functional requirements, interface sources/documentations with respective interface requirements, safety related requirements either quantitative or qualitative with safety assessment reports or documents. If traceability is not properly implemented at the beginning of complex system development, it may lead to a disastrous outcome.
