What are the best practices for peer tutoring in the classroom?

The student plays the role of a young teacher to the outside world, by explaining and conveying information to them. Which leads to increasing the student's self-confidence and increasing his leadership, And it’s important to assess these strategies to determine what will work best for specific groups of students.

Peer tutoring can be a valuable educational strategy that benefits both the tutor and the tutee. Peer tutoring can be a powerful tool for enhancing learning and building a supportive classroom community when implemented effectively. Regular communication with both tutors and tutees is essential to ensure the success of the program.

In our multilingual school, we use pair tutoring as part of our commitment to translanguaging in the classroom. For example, students who find either or both English and Arabic more challenging are paired up with a ‘translation buddy’. These ‘translation buddies’ (who are highly competent in all forms of Arabic and English) will help their peer to understand the requirements of the task. These students are also encouraged to present their work in a way that is accessible to them. More often than not, it is the knowledge we are assessing, rather than the ability to communicate in a second, or even third, language.

It's actually very important to let the students try the peer tutoring not only because it gives them self confidence and make them able to evaluate but also because this is one of the most important skills for the 21st century students So we need to select the students that have the ability to do this, give them clear tasks and train them.

Structured Sessions: Encourage tutors to follow a structured session plan that includes an agenda, activities, and a timeline. Although teachers might create balanced pairs, I believe before tutoring actually takes place, each student should know who they will be working with regardless of their role (tutor/learner) to ensure there’s a comfort level before pairs are made public. Teachers may not be aware of possible negative interactions between two students outside of their classroom environment. Thinking extremely, one could be a bully towards the victim, who in turn might be intimidated to speak up or too afraid to say no. Just better to be safe than sorry

In my experience students who do not have a prior relationship outside of being peers work together most effectively. Also, as previously mentioned, teacher monitoring is essential to successful peer tutoring as the most capable student is just that, a student. Teachers need to follow up with the students on a regular basis to ensure that the goals for tutoring are being met.

I use peer tutoring in my math and physics classes as frequently as possible. I briefly introduce a well-defined topic to the students, for example, a particular factoring technique, and then assign some exercises to do immediately. After that, I divide the students into pairs and invite them to solve their tasks by discussing them with their partners. If students use tablets or other electronic devices to write down their exercises, I ask them to share what they have written on Google Drive using Jamboard. This way, the whole class can understand what is happening, and everyone can contribute to the discussion.

Tutors should be open to feedback and continuous improvement. Accountability: Hold tutors accountable for their commitments and responsibilities. Monitor the progress of tutees and ensure that tutoring sessions are productive.

For sure the students need to see that they did something good so they should be braised for their achievements and show them their results after doing the peer tutoring.

Peer tutoring has helped me improve my young learners' social and emotional learning skills. My young learners are self-aware and mindful of each other's feelings and emotions. They show empathy and are compassionate. I reinforced my peer tutors with class points and extra play time once a week.

Peer tutoring is especially helpful when teaching students who are learning in English as a foreign language. Stronger students can explain concepts in their home language which strengthens their own understanding and vocabulary but also helps the other children better access the learning
