I find most “mentoring programs” have little to no structure. They align two employees with similar job descriptions (or a senior with a junior) and hope for the best. This sets both the mentor and mentee up for stress/failure. By providing clear and pertinent goals for the mentor to follow, they can more easily focus on the content to cover, as in almost every case, they are still maintaining their daily duties.

The second step to creating a successful mentoring program is to match mentors and mentees based on their needs, interests, and compatibility. You need to have a clear criteria for selecting and screening mentors and mentees, such as their experience, expertise, availability, motivation, and personality. This is so critical- and where many organizations miss the mark. Aligning not only someone who has held an equivalent role/experience, but also who is willing and able to be a mentor! Not everyone who is good at their job can train someone else to do it. Screening mentors for their attitude, aptitude, and availability is essential to the success of the mentee.
