What are the best practices for making your data model accessible to all users?

In my experience conceptual models are perfect to work with from a Data Governance point of view: They can be understood by and even created with your business and they are a powerful tool to clarify definitions by adding relations and to move towards a common language within your business. All of this is an important basis for interoperable and easy to interpret data.

A conceptual model is very high level. A physical model exactly matches the database. The logical model is the most important in understanding the business. Unless you can validate with the business that you have represented the data correctly, you're not ready to move on to the physical model. A huge diagram can be overwhelming. My preference is to use subject areas to work through with the business and highlight it with sample data so it can come alive to people. Unless they can understand, for example, how a customer is represented with addresses and phone numbers, they can't tell you that it's right. You may have to take extra time to provide documentation the business can understand, but it's critical to get the data right.
