In my experience, the regular checks of an SHM system are vital to keep the structure always in best shape and prevent malfunctions that could cause undetected structural problems. We should establish a schedule for routine inspections in Check List forms comprising strain gauges, examining sensors, joints and/or connections, data acquisition units for physical damage like cracks, excessive deflation or environmental wear. Sensors calibration must be verified regularly to assure the accuracy of data. Keeping records and detailed log of these routine inspections will help us to track the system performance by the time, identify any recurring problems, then put plans for maintenance procedures as needed.
