I would suggest to ensure the input voltage levels & power quality should meet the VFDs requirements, like voltage sags, spikes and harmonics can adversely affect the VFDs performance. When inductive loads are high, I recommend a separate Harmonic filter near the Distribution station & of course power factor also to be controlled at first priority with APFC.

The harsh environment they usually operate in addition to the tendency of increasing the power/space ratio while keeping production costs at minimum, lead to very small constructions, with very tight airways, making vfd very susceptible to airvents blockage. Ok addition to the below, comms for remote operation via industrial metworks or IO need to be checked. Industrial installations tend to change with added equipment that might act as additional emc sources, changing the electronic environment of the vfd since 1st operation.

At least a no load test (load uncoupled) must be performed (load test under off production conditions is always possible) in order to verify all of the above mentioned articles. Both off load and on load test must have a suitable duration that will allow for the motor to rise proper temperature in order for the vector control model to operate properly

Either train your maintenance engineers accordingly or set up a preventive maintenance contract with the vfd manufacturer allowing for annual inspections and add hoc interventions to have piece of mind, as usually vfds are used on crucial loads

Of all the things on this list, I feel that capturing existing units specific to model and serial numbers is the starting point of the documentation process. Every drive manufacturer has a prescribed maintenance plan generally dealing with fans, caps, and stored spares. So, the serial number will start the defined history, and hopefully, any existing work orders via your system (CMMS or other) can fill in some of the gaps. I also like collecting the installed designs' technical bulletins and firmware histories.

One thing that I have found help full when you are storing replacements is to power them on once a year. Also keeping them off the ground and in climate controlled storage!
