Having a clear understanding what you want to achieve using the IAM tool is key. The capabilities of IAM tools range from user authentication, authorisation to automate access provisioning/de-provisioning workflow and everything in between. In the past I've worked on automating the workflow of access creation and removal for users in target applications using IAM tool. From a risk perspective, these are a few points I could recall :- 1. Custom integrations costs a lot to develop, takes longer to integrate and can make systems clunky, causing headaches during upgrades. Going for standards not only speeds things up but also ensures smooth compatibility with a variety of systems. Even if a vendor isn't on board with standards, push for it – it's a win-win, in my experience. Helps you integrate better and they have a product with a wider compatibility.

With any luck...all your platforms use standard protocols for IAM. However, that almost never happens. The protocols available from each service need to be taken into consideration while designing the infrastructure.
